In the footsteps of Captain Eric Frank Penn, 4th Battalion, Grenadier Guards

A glorious trip to the Battlefield of Loos, walking in the footsteps of a Grenadier officer with his grandson, granddaughter and great grandson. We walked the ground in front of the Hohenzollern Redoubt in the area that he was killed in action, having taken in the overall context of the Battle and in particular the first actions of the Guards Division in 1915.

As the great grandson was also a great great nephew of Captain Fergus Bowes Lyon, Black Watch, we visited Quarry cemetery where in his body is believed to lie.

The following day, the 100th anniversary of EFP’s death, we paid our respects at his graveside at Vermelles Military Cemetery. The weather was so right somehow – misty, dewy, sombre autumnal days.

It doesn’t get better than this.
