In the footsteps of Captain Sir Iain Colquhoun Bt DSO, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards

An ideal April weekend, Ypres devoid of coaches, with the grandson, granddaughter and great grandson of Sir Iain, retracing his steps around the Salient and then down to Neuve Chapelle and Laventie. We were blessed with having his war diary so locations and sequence were easier to follow. Magic days

“Went the day well?

We died and never knew.

But well or ill, Freedom, we died for you .

Went the day well?”

John Maxwell Edmonds

published in the Times in February, 1918.
